1. Envision the Worst and Best Drill
Step 1: Sit down for 10 to 20 minutes and imagine your life if you DO NOT work on your game. If you eat bad, don’t get to the gym to practice, and don’t train your mind. What will your life look like in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, and at the end of your life? How will you feel about your game?
Step 2: Sit down for 10 to 20 minutes and imagine your life if you DO work on your game. If you eat bad, don’t get to the gym to practice, and don’t train your mind. What will your life look like in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, and at the end of your life? How will you feel about your game?
Now, summarize both on notecards. Step 1 should make you want to run away from that future, Step 2 should make you want to run toward that future. A monster to get away from and a fortune to go toward!
2. Know your weaknesses
Print this and fill it out. Ask coaches and mentors for help. Then get into the gym and create a game plan to attack these weaknesses.
Breakdown your goals like this! I gave you some examples, but make your own. I always list my goal and then my fears if I don’t get my goal along with my plan of action.
3 Offensive Goals
- Shoot 90% form FT this season.
- Fears: If I don’t do it, I won’t be the guy the team counts on. I won’t make myself more valuable.
- Wants: I wants be the guy who gets the ball in the clutch
- Plan of action: 150 free throws per day + Daily mental swishes + visualize hitting free throws in the clutch 10 times per day
- Turn the ball over less than 2 times per game
- Fears: If I don’t I won’t be on the floor.
- Wants: I want scouts to know I can take care of the ball
- Plan of action: 25 minute ball0handing drills 6 days per week + study game film before each game
- Develop a killer fadeaway
- Fears: I will get blocked if I don’t develop it. I will be dominated by taller players.
- Wants: I want to be as skilled as Jordan or Kobe. I can do this.
- Plan of action: shoot 400 fadeaways each day, 6 days a week + study film of the great fadeaway shooters + visualize daily.
You can then do the same for defense, your mental game, and off-court goals (e.g. be a good student, read so many hours a day, never miss work, volunteer, etc.)
Next set these goals:
3 Big Basketball Goals
Example:
- Get a college scholarship, full ride to D1/D2/D3
- Become All-State
- Lead my team in scoring
Set Team Goals
Sit down with your team – what are three offense, and defense, and big goals you want to set? Score 100 points per game, hold the other team under 50 points, win the conference, make the playoffs? Aim high and be realistic!
4. HOMEWORK:
Carry notecards with your goals on them and look over them each day. ACT AS IF you have already achieved them, and then LET THEM GO and focus on working hard. That is, look at the summit and then get back to hiking. Be excited!
Each week revisit the future if you do work hard and if you do not work hard!
